A contemporary Southwestern silver and red branch

coral ring by Brett W. Bastien, circa 2000

This is a marvelous and dramatic ring by the extremely talented Santa Fe jeweler, Brett W. Bastien. Years ago, Mr. Bastien was accorded a rare privilege for a non-Indian by the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and was allowed to participate in the jewelry instruction program under the distinguished contemporary Pueblo jeweler, Duane Maktima. Bastien’s original designs are known for their creative use of interesting stones and they are always unusually well-crafted.

This ring is exactly that, featuring a strikingly large, asymmetrical piece of red branch coral which has been  beautifully and smoothly polished and set in a deeply-serrated silver bezel mounted atop a heavy split-chisel silver shank. The ring measures a size 10-10 1/4 on a professional ring sizer. It weighs a very substantial 41 grams or 1 1/2 ounces. It is marked “.925” for Sterling silver on the inside and is stamped with the artist’s initials “BWB”. This piece is in excellent original condition.
