A California Pala Mission Indian basketry tray

by Juana Rodriguez, circa 1940’s

A beautifully-woven undecorated basketry tray by the noted Pala Mission Indian weaver Juana Rodriguez. Collected directly from Juana Rodriguez in the late 1940’s by well-known La Mirada, California collector Bud Siegel. There are two wonderful old original faded color photos of Rodriquez holding the basket in her home. The basket is woven entirely out of Golden juncus and measures 13 1/4” in diameter, 2 1/8” in height and the stitch count 9-10 per inch. It is in excellent original condition with only a couple missing stitches. The basket has a marvelous, gentle, warm patina from its

60-plus years of age.
