A stunning contemporary Navajo

silver pendant by Jennifer Curtis

How many little girls grow up literally with a silversmith’s hammer in their small hands? Jennifer Curtis (b.1964) is one who did, first beginning to work silver at the very tender age of eight at the side of her famous Father, the outstanding Navajo silversmith Thomas Curtis, Sr. (1942-2013)

The old saying “Like Father, Like Daughter” certainly applies here and it applies in spades. Jennifer Curtis is a very serious and especially talented chip off the old block; Thomas Curtis Sr. taught and mentored the young Jennifer in all aspects of traditional Navajo silversmithing and you can clearly see the marvelous similarities in the work of these two fine artists; use of heavy solid silver, intricate, precisely and deeply-applied stamp and chisel work and a powerful, bold and compelling traditional design sensibility.

This fine pendant is a simply sensational example of Jennifer Curtis’ work. Aesthetically and technically, it is absolutely first-rate in every aspect. The elegantly stamped and chiseled oval-shaped central “Morning Star” design medallion stands out beautifully and radiates boldly outwards from the somewhat domed surface of the silver oval background. So crisply is this done that the star actually appears to almost be alive, literally pulsing with energy.

The pendant measures 2 1/8” in length including the silver jump ring and it is 1 1/4” in width at its widest point. It weighs a very comfortable 17 grams or 5/8 ounce and is in excellent, nearly-new original condition. The pendant is properly signed on the back with Jennifer Curtis’ cursive hallmark of her first name “Jennifer”. The pendant can be very easily and elegantly worn on a black silk jewelry cord as we have pictured it here or also hung on a nice silver chain or leather thong, if desired. We will include a nice length of this black silk jewelry cord along with the purchase of the pendant.

“My work is an extension of my history, my family. My biggest influence

is my master, my teacher, my father. His recent passing has brought special meaning

to each swing of the hammer, each design I create.”

-Jennifer Curtis, 2014

This pendant is an extremely attractive, beautifully-crafted and easily wearable piece by one of the very finest Navajo silversmiths working today. This pendant is a big artistic statement, with a commanding presence in a diminutive package. Small and in charge.
