A beautiful Navajo tufa-cast silver

belt buckle, circa 1930’s-1940’s

This gorgeous buckle is a product of painstaking and meticulous traditional Navajo craftsmanship. Fine tufa-casting is a technique which requires both great artistry and serious technical skill, both of which this unknown silversmith clearly had in abundance. He cast three separate silver pieces and soldered them together to make the buckle then finished it off by adding a hand-forged silver tang.

The buckle measures 2 1/8” in height and is slightly under 2 1/4” in width. It weighs 40.1 grams or 1.3 ounces. It can accommodate a belt of up to one-inch in width. The buckle is in excellent original condition. This buckle would look just great either on a Concho belt or simply on its own with a nice leather belt.
