A framed original early black and white photograph of famed Hopi jewelry artist, Charles Loloma making jewelry, 1962

THIS IS A WONDERFUL original press photograph from the archives of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce in Phoenix, Arizona. In it, the young Charles Loloma (1921-1991) is pictured sitting at his work bench in his studio crafting one of his ground-breaking inlaid silver cuff bracelets, typical of his unique, never-before-seen style of jewelry work in the early 1960’s. Loloma was born in 1921, so he would have been 41 years old when this photograph was taken, fairly early in his jewelry-making career which would continue for almost another 30 years until his untimely death in 1991. The Phoenix Chamber of Commerce sold a large part of their older photo archives in the 1980’s and 1990’s and that is how this photograph came into the public realm.

The photograph was clearly taken by an unknown professional photographer and it is very beautifully and dramatically composed. Loloma’s concentration and serious dedication to his art shows clearly on his expression. The photo measures 8” in height and is 6 1/4” in width (sight) and its framed dimensions are 15” in height and 13” in width. The photograph is in excellent original condition. We recently had the photograph professionally matted and framed to the highest archival and aesthetic standards by Goldleaf Framemakers of Santa Fe, Santa Fe’s finest art framers. It is framed in a custom-made, hand-carved beveled and splined light maple wood frame under UV light-resistant “TruVue” museum conservation art glass. A photocopy of the back of the photograph is attached to the back of the framed piece with the following captions: “Charles Loloma-Hopi Craftsman working on Indian bracelet. PHOENIX CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PHOTO” A further caption reads “Scottsdale, Arizona, April 8, 1962”

This is a beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind, historic photograph of one of Native America’s most accomplished

and significant artists at work creating art.
