A vintage Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico,

5-strand Bisbee turquoise nugget and melon shell heishi necklace, circa 1950’s-1960’s

the 90 or so natural turquoise nuggets in this necklace are from the renowned Bisbee turquoise Mine in Arizona, one of the most famous, rare and desirable types of American gem turquoise in existence. The nuggets are very nicely graduated in size, the larger nuggets at the center measure approximately 1/2" in length, the smaller nuggets measure 1/4" to 3/8" in length.

All the nuggets have the characteristic, beautiful chocolate-colored matrix which is the hallmark of “lavender-pit” Bisbee stones. The color and matrix  of the turquoise nuggets blends beautifully with the medium-brown mottled hand-cut and hand-rolled melon shell heishi beads. The necklace is finished with a nice, tight, clean new cotton Pueblo or “squaw”-style wrap at the neckline.

The necklace measures 17 1/2" in length measured from the top of the wrap to the bottom of the beads while lying flat on a table and it weighs 123 grams or 4 3/8 ounces. It is in excellent original condition with a newly re-done cotton Pueblo-style wrap.
