“Rio Grande below Taos” by Willard Page,

Oil on Board, circa 1930’s-1940’s

This beautiful painting depicts the magnificent gorge of the Rio Grande river below Taos, New Mexico. It was painted by the interesting Southwestern artist, Willard J. Page (1885-1958) who maintained a small painting studio in Boulder, Colorado while traveling constantly around the Southwest from the 1930’s through the 1940’s with his wife, Ethel, in their makeshift RV. Page made his living painting mostly small, colorful, realistic plein-air pictures throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and the California desert which he sold as the couple traveled about or out of his studio while in residence in Boulder. Page’s work has an extremely authentic, somewhat folky quality and is often quite beautiful and highly evocative. This piece is painted in oil on board. The painting itself measures 8” by

10 ½” and the framed dimensions are 11” by 14”. The painting is framed in its original wood frame which is stamped “Original Oil Paintings, Willard J. Page Studio Boulder, Colorado” on the back at the top. The painting is titled in pencil at the lower left of the verso in the artist’s hand.  It is in excellent original condition but could benefit from a cleaning.

It is signed “W.Page” at the lower right.
